@Liberty—is a horsemanship and connection experience created specifically for women who have experienced a breast cancer diagnosis. Unlike traditional support groups, @Liberty is an active, movement-based program that uses hands-on liberty training with rescued horses to help rebuild confidence, joy, and self-trust. No horse experience is needed, and the work is gentle, empowering, and deeply meaningful.

Our Mission

About us

@liberty was created by Kellie Kvern, who was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in 2023. Her commitment to her own rescue herd inspired her to partner with This Old Horse to bring this vision to life.

Through groundwork and liberty training—working with horses free of tack, pressure, or expectation—participants rediscover strength, presence, and joy reflected back to them. Each encounter nurtures both emotional and physical well-being, inviting women to experience freedom, trust, and partnership in its purest form.

Love is good. At This Old Horse, that’s more than a motto—it’s our way of life.

Founded in 2012, This Old Horse, Inc. is a multi-accredited nonprofit equine welfare organization based in Minnesota. Our mission is simple and steadfast: to provide a lifelong safety net for horses in transition—whether they are retired racehorses, broodmares, service horses, senior companions, or those with special needs.

Every day, across our family of barns, more than 200 horses find sanctuary, care, and new purpose. Some retire in peace, some recover from hardship, and many are reimagined into new careers through retraining and adoption. Alongside them, hundreds of volunteers discover the joy of helping horses help people—through education, community programs, and healing connections.

We believe every horse has value, no matter age, ability, or past.

Accredited by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA) and the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) and supported by national and local partners, we’ve helped more than 800 horses since 2012—and we’re just getting started.

At This Old Horse, we don’t just save horses. We celebrate them, learn from them, and walk beside them on the journey to a happier, healthier future.
